How to do Freddy Krueger Make-Up

Posted in Three Muses Clothing, Costume How-To at 5:57 pm by Candy

To get the burned nasty look shown here with my Freddy Krueger outfit, I started with 3-D Gel by Mehron. The instructions with it say to simply put it in a cup of hot water and wait until it liquifies. I had the big 2 fl.oz. bottle, and it refused to do anything but get mildy warm on my first attempt. There was nothing liquid about it. So I boiled water on the stove, poured that into a large coffee cup, sat the bottle down in it and prayed the whole thing wouldn’t melt.

It took a few tries before the contents started getting squishy, though they were nowhere close to being ready to squirt out of the small opening in the bottle lid. Being impatient, and somewhat worried about a complete meltdown, I tested the contents by jamming a chopstick down the side and jiggling it around. The center of the bottle was still pretty solid, but the sides were starting to get soft. I gave the bottle one more heating before it was gooey enough to work with.

It’s best to start with a freshly washed, but thoroughly dry face. You don’t want to have any make-up, surface oils or lotion on your skin or the gel will not stick as well. My application tool of choice was a chopstick because I never did get the bottle fully melted, but you can use anything from a real make-up brush to your fingers. The guy at the costume shop where I bought the gel at said he used a popsicle stick. My method was to jam the chopstick in the bottle, swirl it around so the gel stuck to it, then quickly smear it in big globs on my face. It takes full commitment at this point.

I just kept going until the entire area was covered. The gel is safe to use over hair, and later in the evening I was relieved when it peeled right off without taking my eyebrow with it. The directions say to keep messing with it to get the right effect, but I found that if I messed with it, then it peeled right off my face in big clumps. So I adopted a method of smear, squash and don’t touch. If anything needed smoothing, then wet fingertips worked best. The gel didn’t feel bad at all going on. It was like putting on a warm oatmeal mask.

It takes a while to fully dry, but you can start applying make-up while it is still a little sticky. When I was doing test spots on my arm, it took nearly an hour to completely dry. So for the face, I waited until I could tap it without with sticking to my finger and coming off my face. It dries to a light peachy tan color. I first covered the entire mess with liquid foundation to even out the sticky parts. Then I applied dark brown eyeshadow and dark blush with a blush brush, creating a mottled burnt look by putting it on in different spots and blending it all together.

The next step was applying the fake blood. I used Squirt Blood by Mehron in the Dark Venous shade. The squirt blood is thinner than stage blood, and is good for splattered and dripping effects. I squirted it right out of the bottle to make slash marks and then used my fingertips to rub some of it in various spots on my face, accentuating some of the bloody looking areas. I also applied it around the edges of the gel to make it blend into my skin. I then gave the finished gory masterpiece a couple sprays with Ben Nye Final Seal to protect my hard work.

Freddy Krueger costume: from packaged piece to costume couture

Posted in Three Muses Clothing, Costume How-To at 4:00 pm by Candy

This Halloween, as the owner of Three Muses, I was insanely busy. With no time to create a costume from scratch, I picked one that I couldn’t sell because it arrived damaged. The sexy Freddy Krueger costume by Rubies looked pretty cool, but as soon as I took it out of the package, one of the blades fell off the glove. As I was tyring to fix it, another one fell off. So after some ingenuity and a little beading wire, everything was wired back on and fully mobile.

Then I tried on the dress and found there was nothing sexy about a scratchy sweater that come up to my chin and down to my knees. And the claw marks are not positioned on the stomach, like shown in the photo, but up higher so it shows your bra. So I came up with a new costume idea- someone who was attacked by Freddy and then possessed.

To get the attacked look, I cut out the neck so the dress fit down on my shoulders. This also repositioned the claws marks lower so now they were in the same place as on the catalog photo. Then I cut the dress shorter on one side and added slash marks to the arms and back. Cutting the neck out left me with a baggy sack of a dress, so I took it in several inches in the back. Once I got a decent fit, I found a brown bra and sewed the front of the dress to the bra so the bra straps would hold up the front and let everything hang like it had been ripped off. To complete the look, I added ripped red fishnets and some beat-up black work boots.

The make-up was the final touch, so check back for my next post, where I will explain how to do the make-up and what products I used to achieve the nasty Freddy Krueger look.

New photos of Official Star Wars Slave Leia costume

Posted in Three Muses Clothing, Slave Leia News at 10:19 pm by Candy

The photo on the package and catalog for the newly licensed Princess Leia Slave costume by Rubies/Secret Wishes differs greatly from the actual costume so we felt it would be best to take some of our own photos. Once we got the costume out of the package and worked with its rubbery material for a bit, it actually looked pretty good!

The big Three Muses Hallowoops! Sale

Posted in Three Muses Clothing, Sales and Specials at 1:13 pm by Candy

Happy Halloween season to everyone!

We’re kicking off the first week of October by auctioning off all our “oops” inventory. Since our costumes are handmade and we are very picky about what we send out, we end up with a lot of costumes that didn’t pass our inspection. Like a Slave Girl top that isn’t symetrical enough, or a pair of LeeLoo suspenders that were cut too short, or something ended up with a spot of paint where it shouldn’t have been. We save all those for the big HalloWOOPS! Sale and will be auctioning them off in our eBay store.

Stop by the first week of October to find a great deal! visit: Three Muses eBay Store

Three Muses as Alice in Wonderland at DragonCon 08

Posted in Three Muses Clothing, Customer Photos at 12:33 pm by Candy

Our first night at DragonCon 08 was truly a group effort. I enlisted the help of Sean, Kerri and Michelle to complete our group of Alice, Cheshire Cat, Mad Hatter and Queen of Hearts. We had a mix of Three Muses original costumes and spruced up some Leg Avenue pieces that we sell in the store. The Leg Avenue Queen of Hearts costume is a really nice piece right out of the package. A rarity with packaged costumes.

You can see more photos from our trip in the DragonCon album on MySpace!

Officially licensed Star Wars Slave Leia costume now available

Posted in Three Muses Clothing, Slave Leia News at 7:16 pm by Candy

We’ve just added a sexy new costume by Secret Wishes to the website: the Offically licensed Slave Leia costume.

Includes: Top, briefs with attached skirt, belt, choker (without chain) and hair combs.

These are currently in stock in XS and M, but we are expecting size S to come in soon.

The Review:
While there are many Slave Girl costumes available, this is the only officially licensed Star Wars Slave Leia costume available. That said, it is also the cheapest one available. After inspecting the costume and giving it a try-on, I would say it is good enough for Halloween, but would not work well for a convention or any event where accuracy or a quality appearance is important.
It is perfect for someone just looking for a Halloween or party costume. The brief style bottoms make it easier to wear than the real Slave Leia style skirt. Much more coverage! And the top ties around the neck and velcros in back for a pretty snug fit. All the gold colored parts are made of a rubbery material, so they may take some reforming when you take them out of the package. The costume looks much better on than when you first take it out of the bag, but I still don’t think it looks exactly like the catalog photo.

Slave Girl Madellaine survives ComicCon and makes it onto Yahoo Movies

Posted in Three Muses Clothing, Slave Leia News, Customer Photos at 12:37 pm by Candy

The photos from ComicCon are just starting to come in! Our first glimpse of the festivities is from Madellaine, who is wearing the Deluxe Slave Girl costume. You can see her in the Yahoo Movies ComicCon gallery:

It takes a second for the photo to load and switch to the right page.

She wore the costume all day, participated in the group photo and braved the general mob scene that is ComicCon.

“I saw lots of other slave costumes, and I must
say, mine (yours) is my favorite.  I find it to be the
most flattering of all the ones I have seen.  People
stopped me to ask where I had gotten it, and I gave
them your website address (hope that’s okay).  Thanks
again for a phenomenal costume, which led to an
awesomely fun Comic Con experience.  I had a blast!”
